Philip’s Academy Charter School Paterson is committed to helping its young men and women build a strong foundation for life. At Philip’s Academy, learning is natural and exciting. It happens everywhere, inside and outside the classroom. With love and support, teachers encourage students to reach for their own ambitions. While teaching a standard curriculum, math, science and history, they instill a hunger and determination in students encouraging them to forge their own life path and make their dreams come true.
Philip’s Academy Charter School of Paterson was established by Philip’s Education Partners, opening its doors in 2016 with four kindergarten classes of 60 children, total, who were selected by lottery. In 2017, with the initial group of 60 moving on to first grade, 75 new kindergartners were welcomed to Philips. Each year, the school will expand one more grade until it is a full K-8 school.
An important part of Philip’s Academy’s curriculum is EcoSpaces Education, which is designed to help children learn, grow, and thrive. EcoSpaces supports the whole child and inspires students to be aware of how nutritious food plays a part in the health of their bodies and minds, increasing their understanding of the connection between themselves and their surroundings.
Philip’s Academy embraces technology as a key learning tool and uses many forms of interactive technology and e-learning tools to boost engagement and enliven the classroom. Philip’s believes every child has a spark of genius and that it is the school’s job to provide the right environment in which each can grow. This includes providing classrooms with traditional seating—desks—as well as alternative seating—bean bags, couches—as well as alcoves and reading nooks where they can be physically comfortable while they learn.
